Teen Perspectives: Student and Teacher Workshop on Social Justice

Hey Miami Teens! PTAC hosted a Teacher Workshop on Social Justice on Friday April 19th! This event is was to all M-DCPS teachers and students. Students were able to receive 10 community service hours for attending, and teacher’s attended as part of their ongoing professional development.

PTAC programmed a full day worth of events, all having to do with the intersection of art, social justice, and education. We started with our ice breaker called “the race,” facilitated by PAMM Teaching Artist Chire Reagans and longtime friend of PTAC and YoungArts alumna and judge, Loni Johnson. We moved on to tours that centered on social justice issues, centering on race, gender, sexual identity, mental health, immigration status, and class. Our day continued with a panel discussion moderated by PTAC members Lina Fernandez and Kevin Garcia. Our panel hosted experts in our various topics as well as teens that shared their personal experiences.

We finished up the day with our teen designed art activity, SLIME! We figured it was a great way to de-stress after all the necessary and thoughtful conversations.

Thank you to everyone who came and participated in our discussions, and special thank you to our student and adult panelists who shed light on important topics and discussed scenarios with our guests.
