American Tableaux: Many Voices, Many Stories
June 20, 2003 - September 7, 2003
American Tableaux: Many Voices, Many Stories celebrates the rich variety of tales told by individuals, communities, and cultures through more than eighty works of art that span the twentieth century. Drawn from the permanent collection of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the exhibition includes works by more than sixty artists who reflect a wide range of attitudes, viewpoints, and experiences about life in the United States. Together, the diverse works invite us to examine how the term “American” and the idea of a single, coherent American society has changed over time. To broaden this discussion even further, MAM invited visitors to participate in Miami Stories – an evolving installation in our Visitors Gallery devoted to reflecting the stories found within our own community.
American Tableaux: Many Voices, Many Stories was organized by the Walker Art Center. It is made possible by generous support from the Dain Rauscher Foundation and Target Stores. In Miami, the exhibition is supported by MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund and coordinated by Curator Lorie Mertes. Programming at MAM is supported in part with a grant from Target Stores.
